October 30-November 3: We will be preparing for our first Socratic Seminar this week. Students will be given 2 articles and will be asked to identify their "claim" (their opinion on the topic) and provide evidence from the articles to support that claim. We will be reading the articles, taking notes, developing a claim, pulling evidence from the texts, and preparing questions in class. Unfortunately, students are unable to take the articles home, but I have provided them below. Please talk to your student about the articles/topic/their claim/their evidence/etc.

November 6-9: We are working on identifying theme (the lesson/moral) and conflict (the problem) in a poem. Students are reading multiple poems, and identifying the theme and conflict for each. We will then compare the two using the RACE model (see below).

RACE Model - When students are given a question, we are having them use the RACE model to respond. This gets them into the habit of restating the question, using evidence to support, and explain their thinking. Students should have this in their Writer's NB...
